Ashby not hurting home values; better rankings for Houston, UH, and Rice; support the Astrodome
Just a handful of smaller items this week:- Houston now has the 4th largest GMP among metros behind the big 3 of NYC, LA, and Chicago. We passed up DC and are one of the fastest growers among the major metros (behind SF). I was surprised to see cities like Philly and Atlanta so far below us in GMP given that their population size is similar to ours. Hat tip to Jessie.
- UH and Rice are ranked #2 (undergraduate) and #4 (graduate) for entrepreneurship nationally. This is a huge asset for Houston, and one we should absolutely continue to nurture and enhance.
- The Ashby high-rise seems to actually be *enhancing* home values nearby instead of devastating them as predicted! As it started construction in the last year, neighborhood values are up 58%!

Ashby is likely having no effect on this neighborhood so far. Or maybe a slight positive as Maryland Manor was nothing to look at either. But wait until the 20 story building is completed before we see what effect it has on neighboring homes.
Right now not seeing the point of turning the 'Dome into a convention center with so much momentum going towards downtown. There's plenty of surface parking to convert into more convention space or parking garages across the Reliant complex. Why not keep the skeleton of the Dome and use it as fairgrounds/tailgating for Texans/Rodeo. Seems a lot cheaper and not cannibalizing convention movements elsewhere.
It won't be cannibalizing downtown. It will help us keep the OTC (they are out of space and Brazil is trying to steal it) and attract new events that would not otherwise come to Houston or could not be hosted at GRB.
But why the Dome and not a nearby surface lot?
